One Foundation Work Report (2009.04.1 – 2009.06.30)

1.       Media Co., Ltd became One Foundation’s family member. Dachuang will play One Foundation promotion video on its LED screens in downtown Chengdu 60 times a day. It’s estimated that the average viewership will reach 200,000 people / day. 

2.      On April 6, 2009, A Richter scale 6.3 earthquake erupted in central Italy, causing sizable human and property losses. One Foundation was the first NGO in China to respond and donated 200,000 RMB as a relief fund. The fund was transferred to Italian Red Cross.

3.       On April 7, 2009, One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li participated in the celebration of World Health Day in Beijing. This is his first official mission after being named as WHO’s Goodwill Ambassador. With his glamour and charisma, Mr. Jet Li raised public concerns on major health challenges such as emergency responses to health isuues and people’s mental well-beings.

4.       On April 17, 2009, One Foundation Shanghai Office hosted the second philanthropy saloon. Over 40 family members from business, media and NGOs gathered together and shared insights into future development of One Foundation’s Qiang embroidery aid project in Aba Tibetan-Qiang autonomous region.

5.      In late April, 2009, One Foundation joined as third-party supervisor in the dress donation campaign organized by Tianfu Morning newspaper in Sichuan. Until June, 2009, more than 7000 little girls in Sichuan quake hit areas have received dresses.

6.       April, 2009, Shanghai Lanxue Digital Technology Co., Ltd became One Foundation’s partner. The company’s cartoon character Leon the Frog joined One Foundation as the first virtual volunteer. Leon the Frog will engage actively in promoting One Foundation’s philanthropic ideals.

7.       On May 5, 2009, One Foundation and Huaxi Urban newspaper hosted a volunteer recruiting campaign. The campaign recruited 11 volunteers who had had outstanding contribution in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Business leaders and One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li awarded them with banners of valor and took a hiking trip into Wenchuan.

8.       On May 9, 2009, China Merchant Bank launched its One Foundation Caring All in One Card. The card is the second of its kind after CMB caring credit card which allows holders to donate directly to One Foundation on a monthly basis.

9.       One Foundation and Tencent.com and launched an internet platform of monthly donation. Users will be able to express their goodwill every month through automatic transfer from their Tenpay.com accounts.

10.    On May 9, 2009, over 10 One Foundation Caring Credit Card holders gathered from all across the nation in Chengdu to take a part in the first volunteer experience camp. In 2 days, camp members visited Qiang embroidery aid center in Aba Tibetan-Qiang autonomous region, had a face to face interaction with staffs of reconstruction projects and celebrated the spirit of volunteerism. After that, camp members joined the hiking trip through Wenchuan.

11.   On May 2009, One Foundation, Red Cross Society of China, Aba prefecture government, its CPC committee and China Youth Volunteer Association founded an emergency aid alliance in Yingxiu town, Wenchuan county. The launching ceremony showed progress made after a year’s reconstruction, raised continuous public awareness to post-quake reconstruction and pushed for resumption of tourism in Sichuan. One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li bestowed the alliance with its flag and took a 5.12 km hike through quake shattered Yingxiu town with more than 200 volunteer representatives from Hong Kong, Taiwan and other regions. Hiking is widely acknowledged worldwide as a common practice to call for public attention and support to philanthropy. In Hong Kong, hiking is an influential public event which enjoys tens of thousands participants due to its feasibility. One Foundation pioneered hiking in Chinese mainland in a bid to attract continuous attention to attention to reconstruction and introduce the event to the public, enabling more ways in which people may take part in philanthropy. Officials from various level of government, Red Cross Society of China, celebrity volunteers, NGO representatives, volunteers from the business circle, representatives from CMB credit card department, Huaxi Urban newspaper and aid alliance joined the hiking from all across the country at their own expenses. The hike went through collapsed Baihua bridge, ruins of Yingxiu elementary school and booming reconstruction sites. People’s optimism moved participants. At the end of the hike, One Foundation set up an exhibition area for participants to know more about reconstruction projects and progress being made.

12.  On May 12, One Foundation, together with its partners hosted a photo exhibition on reconstruction. The exhibition showed photos that cover people’s livelihood, culture, reconstruction of houses, mental recovery, elders and so on to reflect upon progress made after a year’s reconstruction. With the support from JCDecaux China, Juneyao Airlines Co.,Ltd. and Purity Interactive, the photos were shown to the public via subway light boxes and via flight advertising on Juneyao’s passenger planes in six major cities in China.

13.    On May 19, 2009, the public appraisal of annual One Foundation Philanthropy Awards commenced. One Foundation would accept application from all across the country. This year the selection of applicants are divided into three rounds. Methods such as questionnaires, telephone interviews, filed investigations, online public appraisals, Q&A, expert interviews are introduced. In addition, One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li would join experts from the circle of philanthropy, consulting, legal system and media to form the panel. Currently, One Foundation Philanthropy Awards has finished first round of selection, 70 NGO emerged from hundreds of applicants. The winners would receive a one million RMB fund support from One Foundation. They would also receive support including, but not limited to the following non-cash categories: training, leadership building, strategic consultancy, social network integration and so on.  

14.    In May, 2009, One Foundation and one of Hunan TV’s news shows worked together and planed China’s first multi channel volunteer TV show. The show servers as a key conduit for the Foundation to promote its philanthropic ideals. One Foundation hopes the show would become a window for needed NGOs and a platform for volunteers as well as potential donors. The TV show has sections in interactive communities on Taobao.com, Sina.com and Hunantv.com.cn, connecting NGOs and volunteers and providing different ways to contribute to charity. It has enjoyed positive viewer feedback.

15.  In May, 2009, VELO became a family member. Meanwhile, on the 1st anniversary of Sichuan earthquake, VELO sold caring cards and donated sales to One Foundation. VELO hopes its users can learn to have philanthropy as a way of life.

16.    In May, 2009, AdChina became a family member. In the future, AdChina will provide online advertisement slots for One Foundation.

17.    On June 12, 2009, One Foundation Shanghai Office hosted the 3rd philanthropy saloon. The saloon focused on 2009 Philanthropy Awards and One Foundation Home platform to be launched in August. 28 representatives from 20 Shanghai NGOs, business leaders and media friends took part in the event.

18.    On June 20, 2009, Versace hosted a painting event in One Foundation Shuimo Children Home. The theme was “friendship” between China and the United States. Children painted on bags made of canvas. Until June, over 500 pieces of painting have been collected. This fall, the Chinese winners will fly to US to attend the award ceremony. 

19.   In early June, 2009, One Foundation sent donated toys and candies from all over the world to its sandbox project in Sichuan.

20.   In June, 2009, aid materials donated by P&G worth two million RMB have been dispatched to Aba.

21.   In June, 2009, One Foundation formed partnership with A1 advertisement. A1 will provide professional support on brand building.

After Quake Reconstruction Projects:

Poverty Alleviation

1、Qiang Embroidery Aid Project in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Region

The project is a long-term and consistent effort for reconstruction and folk culture preservation. It’s being executed in the county of Wenchuan, Mao and Li in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Region. The Qiang Embrodiery Aid Center as its base, the project helps women in quake hit Aba region. It aims to train 30,000 women by 2017 and is expected to solve employment problem for an accumulative 10,000 women by the end of 2017. In 2009, the project’s objective is: train 2,000 embroidery workers by the end of December. If sales reached 4.7 million RMB as planned, the project will be able to aid 660 families (target incremental annual income per family: 1,000 RMB) in resuming livelihood activities. The project also aims to promote preservation and research of the culture Qiang embroidery. Q1 and Q2 of 2009 have seen 800 workers complete their training. In Q2, Mengniu Dairy purchased embroidery products worth over 3 million RMB, directly benefiting more than 7,000 Qiang families.

2、One Foundation Pig Farm Project for Impoverished Mothers

After Qiang embroidery aid project, on May 6, 2009, One Foundation worked with Chengdu Women’s Federation and launched pig farm project for impoverished mother. It is another sustainable livelihood project in quake hit areas in Sichuan. In the duration of the project, One Foundation will provide initial funding for 50 impoverished mothers in the most severely hit villages in Sanlang town, Congzhou city. The initial funding will help them start raising pigs. Revenue generated by selling piglings will be collected to fund more needy mothers. The project is expected to at least restore income level of these mothers to a bit higher than before quake. Until June 30, 2009, project team has finished 4 health inspections, did epidemic prevention in 50 pig farms and held two training sessions with 125 peasant students. Currently, the disease rate of pigs is 3%, no mortality has been recorded. Piglings’ average weight is 30 kg.

Education

3、One Foundation Post-quake Children Psychological Social Support Project

On the basis of successful execution of One Foundation Children Home Project in Sanjiang, another five homes have been built in the village of Jie, Zhaobi, Heba, Qishan and Maliu. A children amusement park has been constructed. The project has provided nearly 8,000 person times with psychological session by hosting painting, sandbox and gaming events. Meanwhile, 9 local teachers and villagers formed a work team to improve overall abilities.

4、Luowan Central Elementary School Project

The school is located in Sanjie town, Pengzhou city. The school has 715 kindergarten, elementary and junior school students and 46 teachers. May 12 earthquake destroyed most of the facility. Junior school’s multi-purpose rooms were reassigned to elementary school students. Experiment classes had come to a halt. The project will provide funding for a brand new classroom building, a reconstructed main gate with gatehouse. One Foundation will closely follow the reconstruction standards. The project is going to adopt all-frame structures in construction. This will provide safer environment for teachers and students. The project has finished initial survey and nailed down responsibilities of management, supervision as well as design. It’s currently under designing phase.   

5、One Foundation Longtai Washroom Project

Construction will start on December 15, 2008. The Junior School of Longtai Township, Zhongjiang County has 1,340 students and over 60 teachers. Teaching facilities including washrooms have been seriously crippled in the earthquake. One Foundation decided to help the students and teachers after field investigation. The project is in the phase of casting concrete.

6、Alibaba & One Foundation Aid Project for Qsingchuan Teachers

In earlier April 2009, Alibaba & One Foundation Aid Project for Qsingchuan Teachers officially launched. The project aims to pay off a financial aid of RMB 2000/year/person to 593 teachers. These teachers are either from the 15 most severely damaged schools of Qsingchuan Province, or have lost their family members in the disaster. The initial amount of financial aid, which is RMB 800/person, has been paid off in open and just condition, witnessed together by staff members from Alibaba, One Foundation and Qsingchuan Bureau of Education. The second part of financial aid will be paid off by the end of December, 2009.

7、One Foundation Sunny School – Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town Central Elementary School

June 11, 2009, One Foundation Sunny School – Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town Central Elementary School started construction in the school’s original site. The classroom buildings and other facilities have been severely crippled. The emergency assessment team decided not to use them any more. The crippled facilities and buildings have been demolished. Currently, all 95 students are living and having classes in makeshift houses. After a month of field investigation and assessment, One Foundation initiated the project to provide students and teachers with improved infrastructures. The new school has nearly 900 square meters of classrooms, 300 square meters dormitory as well as 150 square meters playground and other affiliated facilities. These facilities will be able to serve 112 students and allow 80 lodging students. The project has gone into construction phase.

8、One Foundation Children Psychological Social Support Project

Due to satisfactory results of the children home project in July 2008, after a few tours, Versace global HQ has decided to support One Foundation Children Home’s operation in 2009. Versace funded One Foundation Children Home in Shuimo. Until June 30, makeshift classrooms have been completed and summer camp has enrolled enough children. The activity room opens every Friday. Staff members organize out door activities, painting events, handcraft lessons as well as children dancing. Interest groups will be formed in July. The project aims to serve 758 children in Shuimo elementary school. So far, direct beneficiaries has reached 1,397 person times, volunteer serves reached 76 person times.

9、One Foundation Children Welfare Institute in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Region

One Foundation and local government provide funding for the project. The construction started on March 15, 2009. The institute will become a children welfare organization, capable of providing foster, recovery, education and special training services to 150 handicapped and orphaned children. Until June, 2009, the main building has been completed and is now under plastering. The students’ dorm has finished main structure building, Teacher’s dorm has finished 2nd floor.  

10、One Foundation Green Primary School

One Foundation signed the agreement with Heihu elementary school in March, 2009, marking the start of the project. The school occupies an area of 6482.4 m² with gross floor area of 4409.04 m². The project is designed under considerations for local Qiang culture, climate as well as environment. Original building language and sign system have been conserved, with added green ingredients. The school will become an eco friendly, energy efficient and recyclable pioneer.

Environment

11、Green Home Project:

On May 20, 2009, One Foundation launched its Green Home Project in Yujiang village, Luoshui county, Shifang city. The Project adopts an open approach to inspire villager participation in home reconstruction and development and will accumulate experiences for rural ecology, production, environment and economic development through ability building and training. The Project aims at facilitating the construction of an economical, eco-friendly and unique residential and public system while preserving the characteristics of local landscape. The project has finished overall planning, effect showcasing, permanent housing design, shop drawing, pipeline scheme, configuration plan as well as plan for commercial zones. Meanwhile, One Foundation has provided 3 gradual training sessions to town officials and villagers.

12、Trash separation & compression unit in Pengzhou

The project is the first of One Foundation’s reconstruction environment projects. One Foundation’s partner Tetra Pak Beijing, Co, Ltd. provides funding; One Foundation supervises the execution of the project. Situated in Laishou village, Tianpeng town, Pengzhou city, the project occupies 3,500 square meters. The project is estimated to be able to process 200 tons of domestic waste. Garbage collected ratio is expected to reach 92%. The project is currently underway and will benefit nearly 200,000 people. Until June, 2009, office building has gone into floor paving. Part of workshop’s columns have been cast.   

Healthcare

13、One Foundation After Quake Mental Health Services Project-Mianzhu Mental Health Services Centre, Institute of Psychology, CAS

At the end of June 2009, One Foundation worked with CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and launched Mianzhu Mental Health Services Project. The goal of the project is to help Mianzhu city, one of the most severely damaged areas in May 12 earthquake, to set up a complete after quake mental health services system, by training a professional psychological consultation team, which will benefit 500,000 residents of Mianzhu city. Currently the services centre has been established. The centre has accomplished the recruiting of psychological consultants and volunteers, and has also built up network with the local bureau of education and schools (elementary schools, middle schools and high schools).

14、One Foundation Mianzhu Children’s After Quake Psychological Recovery Project

On 4th of May 2009, One Foundation Mianzhu Children’s After Quake Psychological Recovery Project officially kicked off. The project will provide one sand table to every 200-300 kindergarten children so as to offer psychological aid to at least 11,000 local children through sand play therapy. The project will greatly improve preschool education, and cultivate a group of sand play therapists in Mianzhu educational system. The therapists will follow international practice and will provide education and psychological assistance to more young people in the quake-affected areas. Now the purchase, dividing load and carry of the sand tables are underway. Meanwhile, therapists training in mid August is also being organized.
