| After the worst earthquake (rated at M7.3) that hit Haiti in two centuries in the early morning of January 13th, 2010 (Beijing time), One Foundation, the first Chinese non-governmental philanthropic organization that reacted, decided to donate USD 100,000 to the victims via China Red Cross Foundation, along with its blessings on January 14th, 2010.
It is reported that the disaster could resulted in the death of more than 100,000 people. Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, is completely flattened and many buildings and communities are destroyed. Nearly 200 UN employees are still missing. 8 members of the China International Peace Mission were buried. The detail on civilian casualty is not clear yet.
Natural disasters such as earthquakes are tragedies faced by all humanity and the global family members should help each other regardless of their nationalities. After the Wenchuan Earthquake, the international community provided numerous aids and rescues to the disaster areas and victims. Today, with Haiti suffering similar fate, One Foundation calls for more participation, attention and support to Haiti and its people.
Continuous Disaster Relief Operation of One Foundation
Disaster relief has always been a focus of One Foundation. Since its establishment in April 2007, One Foundation has provided immediate assistance for Pu’er earthquake in Yunnan, snowstorm in southern China in 2008, Shandong flood, Wenchuan earthquake and many other natural disasters. Its help also extended beyond China. As the first Chinese NGO responding to the disasters, it provided fund and material for the Myanmar hurricane and Italian earthquake.
One Foundation immediately responded to the disasters and provided emergent material assistance to save life. In addition, it also integrated multiple resources for active, long-term reconstruction after major disasters. Due to its prominent achievements in the charitable cause, especially the significant performance during Wenchuan earthquake, One Foundation received “China Charity Award” issued by China Civil Affairs Ministry at the end of 2008.
