On the evening of November 25, One Foundation One Family and the foundation’s rescue coalition opened a series of public training courses on "urban disaster prevention and self-help". It was successfully held in Fudan University, the first of its kind since the public training courses moved from Beijing to Shanghai.
November 15, 2010, a fire broke out in Shanghai Jing'an District. The people nationwide plunged into grief. This fire packed destructive power no less than that of natural disasters, attracting wide attention. While mourning for the victims and praying for the injured, the people are eager to know more about disaster prevention and self-help. Based on the recommendations from netizens and considering Shanghai’s conditions, One Family and One Foundation Rescue Coalition designed a series of public training sessions, and decided to use "urban disaster prevention and self-help" as the theme of the first session in Shanghai.
Rescue Coalition recommended Hou Zhaomin, Yunan Huofeng Rescue Team Leader as trainer. He has rich experience in rescue and relief. He is also a registered safety evaluation engineer, and a registered safety engineer.
The training lasted for nearly 2.5 hours, many of the audience took notes. Others started a "live microblogging, " so people who were not present can also participate.
During the training, Hou told a classic case: "The sinking of a Brazilian vessel. This true story tells us, everyone’s little bit of wrong doing will lead to the final destruction. Hou let the audience carefully recall information such as home appliances layouts, strip location, switch usage, gas hose replacement cycle, etc., and analyzed the safety risks.
Safety and danger are relative concepts; safety is risk below the permissible limits. Hazards are constantly changing; safety and danger will convert into each other anytime. Therefore one should always pay attention to hazards, and keep self-prevention awareness. And after a disaster happens, prevention, rescue, investigation and handling become the most desired information. We are often more concerned about the latter two, but in fact the most important part should be prevention.

On the day before the event, Hou Zhaomin and the coalition’s staff arrived in Shanghai. At Fudan University, to everyone’s suprise, Hou immediately started a "site survey" after arrival, checking the venue for risks in fire facilities and safe access. This served as a first hands-on lesson for the staff. Under Hou's instructions, all doors were opened to maintain safety passage. In Hou Zhaomin’s view, awareness of prevention is more important than knowing how to self help. Keeping the safety passages clear and ensuring the normal use of fire extinguishers, these seemingly simple daily tasks will significantly reduce the risks.
Finally, a lucky draw took place. Lucky audience got the latest first-aid kit from Hangzhou Cror. The kit can serve daily family use or for outdoor purposes.
In order to popularize knowledge of public safety and rescue, and assist the government to better respond to and contain a variety of disasters and conduct relief work, One Foundation Rescue Coalition has started a series of trainings since its establishment in July 2010 in Beijing. The trainings achieved good social results. This time One Family and the Rescue Coalition held first of such trainings in Shanghai. And there will be more in the coming days. Hopefully the training programs will allow more people to master basic knowledge of rescue and public safety skills.
