1. 2008 Global Philanthropy Forum Opened on Nov. 1 and 2 in Beijing. Red Cross Society of China, Boao Forum for Asia and Jet Li foundation co-hosted the forum in JW Marriott Hotel Beijing. Over 500 NGO representatives, business leaders, scholars and media representatives gathered together to share their ideas on philanthropy. One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li gave an opening speech and made a keynote speech in the general meeting. The organization’s executive chairperson Ms. Zhouweiyan moderated the first session focusing on corporate social responsibility. Former US president Bill Clinton and Former Prime Minister Tony Blair sent their video congratulations. The high-level dialogue promoted comprehensive and pragmatic cooperation between different parties.
2. On Nov. 1, One Foundation Philanthropy Grants announced winners in JW Marriott Hotel Beijing. After months of professional assessment, 7 finalists from all around the nation received One Foundation’s million funding. One Foundation Philanthropy Grants aims at establishing a globally accepted standard for operation and appraisal of Chinese non-profit organizations to promote the growth of philanthropy in China. One Foundation hopes the funding will accelerate the growth of mature organizations that have reached international standards or start-up ones with great potential and significance. The ideal of the grant was widely applauded by NGO representatives, business leaders, and scholars. On Nov.19, 2008, One Foundation and Deloitte laid down details on the use of the one million funding with the 7 winners. On Dec. 10, 2008, the 7 winners submitted their project proposals. These proposals covers helping the old, Beijing migrant worker entrepreneurship, women entrepreneurship in impoverished areas in west China, rural women mutual help and legal hotline in minority living areas.
3. On Nov. 1, 2008, in the 2008 China Global Philanthropy Forum co-hosted by One Foundation and Boao Forum Asia, China Merchant Bank and founder of One Foundation Mr. Jet Li announced their plans to release a philanthropy affinity credit card. The move drew wide attention from the public. On Dec. 9, 2008, One Foundation and China Merchant Bank held a press conference in CMB Shanghai credit card center and officially released the affinity credit card. Card holders may prescribe a monthly donation easily. Apart from that, card holder, bank and merchant may generate donations in using the credit card. Meanwhile, CMB donated 1.11 million RMB to support One Foundation Philanthropy Grants. South Beauty Group became the first affiliated merchant of the affinity credit card. Starting from 2009, each card payment in any South Beauty restaurant will generate one RMB donation to One Foundation.
4. From Dec.7 to 12, 2008, One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li and executive chairperson Ms. Zhou Weiyan led an expedition consists mainly of One Foundation staff to revisit reconstruction projects in Sichuan. These projects include: Trash separation & compression unit in Pengzhou, Qiang embroidery aid project in Aba Tibetan-Qiang autonomous region, One Foundation Home Children recovery centers in Aba Tibetan-Qiang autonomous region and Post-quake children psychology social support project in Sanjiang. The expedition invited Chengdu media and local project partners and exchanged experiences in reconstruction.
5. On Dec. 3, 2008, One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li spoke at 2008 Clinton Global Initiative in Hong Kong on the subject of Post-Disaster Relief: Response, Responsibility and Reconstruction.
6. On Dec. 5, 2008, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs (MOCA) held the 2nd China Philanthropy Conference in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. One Foundation won the 2008 China Philanthropy Award. Chinese president Hu Jintao met with One Foundation’s executive chairperson Ms. Zhou Weiyan. In the meeting, President Hu hoped that One Foundation continue to promote the culture of philanthropy and create new ways of fundraising. These guidelines will become part of One Foundation’s strategic principles in the future.
7. On Dec. 7, 2008, China Entrepreneur Magazine held China Business Leader Annual Meeting in Beijing. One Foundation founder Mr. Jet Li attended the meeting and presented the Most Influential Business Leader in 2008 award to board chair & executive president of Phoenix TV Mr. Liu Changle and board chairman of New Oriental Education & Technology Group Mr. Yu Minhong.
8. On Dec. 12, 2008, China Business Committee of 100 and the Organizing Committee of China Global Philanthropy Forum co-hosted ClUB 100 Appreciation Banquet in Beijing. One Foundation representative attended the banquet. That night, all members of China Business Committee of 100 became One Foundation’s volunteer.
10. On Dec. 18, 2008, One Foundation executive chairperson Ms. Zhou Weiyan spoke at “2008 NPO Development Philanthropy Forum” on the subject of “One Foundation’s role in post disaster reconstruction and its challenges”. She also participated in the discussion on creativity and sustainability of NPO.
10. From Dec.20 – 24, 2008, One Foundation Team Annual Meeting was held in Chengdu. One Foundation spent Christmas there. Staff in Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai revisited reconstruction projects in affected areas as volunteers and had a tour on projects conducted by One Foundation Philanthropy Grants winners.
Sichuan Post-disaster Reconstruction Projects:
1. Qiang Embroidery Aid Project in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Region: The project is a long-term and consistent effort for reconstruction and folk culture preservation. It aims at creating employment opportunities for Qiang women by recruiting and training them as professional embroidery makers. Meanwhile, the execution of the project will strive to protect and salvage Qiang embroidery as China’s national intangible cultural heritage. Till Dec. 31, 2008, Employment Helping Centre for Qiang Women in Aba Autonomous Region has helped over 3,000 Qiang women obtain employment.
2. One Foundation Children Home in Sanjiang: The Children Home is a project aimed at providing proper psychological intervention for affected children, psychological guidance and support for parents, teachers for a better educational environment. Meanwhile, the project staffs provide local villagers with professional psychological trainings and conduct ability building sessions. Through these trainings villagers will acquire knowledge and skill needed in reconstruction. The project is conducted by Yunnan Youth and Children Development Center. Till Dec.31, 2008, the project has provided service for over 400 children, with more than 5,000 indirect beneficiaries.
3. One Foundation Environmental Protection Project –Trash separation & compression unit in Pengzhou: The project is located in Tianpeng town in Pengzhou city, occupying 3,500 square meters. The project is estimated to be able to process 200 tons of domestic waste. Garbage collected ratio is expected to reach 92%. The project is currently underway and will benefit nearly 200,000 people.
4. One Foundation Green School Project: The Central Elementary School of Heihu village is 28 km northwest of Mao county and was built in 1952, with a total floor space of 1,221 square meters. After the earthquake, class-D dilapidated floor spaces reached 700 square meters. The school was unable to function with most of its facilities severely damaged. The total loss is estimated to be 3,443,000 RMB. One Foundation will help rebuilding the school with the capacity of 8 classes, 324 students (260 lodging students), 25 teachers and school staffs. The project is currently underway and will feature environmental protection courses.
5. One Foundation Children Welfare Institute in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Region: The welfare institute is situated in Mao county of Sichuan province and is the only children welfare institute in Wenchuan. Since the earthquake measuring 8 Richter scale jolted Sichuan province on May. 12, 2008, much of the center was dilapidated. So far the project has completed preliminary investigation and reached an agreement with the local government to change the original building design for better safety and construct more office buildings. The project is currently underway.
6. One Foundation IT Reconstruction and Poverty Alleviation Through Science & Technology Project: The project aims at restoring IT construction halted by the quake, protecting IT facilities from occasional after-shock and making sure that information blackout will not occur in the future. One Foundation will work with Microsoft and send satellite broadband equipment and remote teaching facilities to 30 remote villages and counties. The first year internet access fee is also included in the package. The project has finished preliminary investigation and is being executed.
7. One Foundation Small Loans Project in Qingchuan: Qingchuan county is among the most severely damaged areas, it has 36 counties, 209 villages, with a farming population of nearly 200,000 and almost 50,000 farming households. The project will provide small loans though working with credit cooperative and Qingchuan county poverty alleviation office. 5 local companies in the business of livestock breeding and mushroom & agarics planting will provide one stop service to help farmers. Through subsidy, over 10,000 affected farming households can apply for small loans from credit cooperative and resuming farming activities. The project will start in the beginning of 2009.
8. One Foundation Gradual Housing Project: The project is situated in Yujiang village, Luoshui county of Shifang city, covering nearly 2,000 villagers. The project aims at integrating eco-friendly design to the current output-linked household contracted responsibility system to achieve village self-governance by advocating the hardworking and enterprising spirit and self-reliance attitude. Villager participation will form the main approach of the project. The project will kick off in the near future. |
